Author Eve Drobot has created a source-book containing everything you've always wanted to know about money. The text is divided into an introduction and eight titled chapters; each page is highlighted with eye-catching illustrations by Joe Weissmann. The book also includes a useful table of contents and an even more useful index.

Beginning with a general definition of money, the author looks at different terms for money, both correct and slang terms. Then, for the more serious student, the book looks at both the history of money and the history of banks.

Two of the most interesting chapters were found near the end. The chapter "Cops and Robbers" discusses the criminal aspect of money, from counterfeiting to forgery to Ronald Biggs, notorious thief. Another chapter then looks at the myths surrounding money, from King Midas to the ancient Roman custom of placing a gold coin in the mouth of the dead to pay for the boat ride across the River Styx.

The final chapter looks at the future of money with a detailed description of credit cards and how they will replace money. The author describes a "super-card" in use in France that contains a microchip.

I found the book both entertaining and easy to read. The illustrations were delightful, and both illustrator and author made a dull topic exciting.

A recommended purchase for school libraries.
