Young readers who like fishing are sure to enjoy Michael's Saturday Surprise, written and illustrated by Audrey Nelson. When Michael goes fishing with his big brother Bryan, he enjoys watching the clouds, peering beneath the ocean water, and pretending he's the captain of a tugboat. But his sense of fun rapidly diminishes when Bryan catches dinner for the family each Saturday, while Michael only manages to snag seaweed one day and hook a rusty can the next. On the third fishing expedition, Michael's luck changes—to the surprise of all onlookers and the delight of the two brothers. The real charm of this story lies in the illustrations. They are precise, vividly hued water-colours that carefully detail the expressions of frustration and surprise experienced by the young fishermen. An ever present seagull, a sidekick of Michael's, mirrors those expressions in a humorous fashion. Young children get caught up in this simple tale and are relieved when Michael's surprise breaks water.
