The Korean War, Canada's last war, has never received significant attention from Canadians despite the sacrifices made by our fighting forces. This war has left very little impression on Canadians, and today the Korean War survives in popular awareness only as a result of the fading television series "M*A*S*H*."

This paperback advances the Canadian point of view significantly. John Melady, who has written on military matters before, gives his readers a complete sense of the events in the early 1950s. The book is saturated with first hand accounts that create a picture of the average Canadian soldier not normally found in official military histories. The actions at Kap’Yong and other places in Korea take on a living dimension when the participants tell the story in their own words. Melady has gone to considerable effort to advance the average veteran's account. This is not the general staff telling its story.

The book is very straightforward in style-easily read and understood. Many photographs enhance the text, which includes useful appendices and a listing of those who died as well as of those who were decorated. A useful bibliography is also included. This book should do a great deal to create more awareness of Canada's role in this significant cold war event. Korea will provide a great deal of additional information for high school students and I recommend it.
