This new test is an individually administered screening instrument designed to identify those students who should be referred for further, more thorough assessment. The total test score is purported to be "a predictor of possible learning disabilities." There is a separate form of the test for each grade level from kindergarten to grade 5, inclusive.

The Einstein test consists of seven subtests: language/cognition, word recognition, oral reading, reading comprehension, auditory memory, arithmetic, and visual-motor integration. There is little that is brand new in this instrument, and the so-called subtests are really brief. The preliminary technical manual, which contains information on standardization and research findings, was not included with the test. It would be impossible to recommend use of a fairly expensive test without this information.

However, the Einstein does look simple to administer and score, and the construction and printing look first-rate. It also seems to combine a wide range of good, albeit tiny, bits taken from or inspired by other well-researched instruments. If you're unhappy with the vast sea of alternatives currently out there, the Einstein,/i> might well be worth a look, once the technical manual is available.
