This study by two professors from the McGill Faculty of Education is a comprehensive overview of the results of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec since the 1960s in the area of education. The intended audience is the teaching profession, both in Quebec and wherever comparative education is taught. As a teacher in Quebec from 1969 to 1980, I found little to criticize either in the discussion of the background and the legislation or in the description of the elementary and secondary schools, post-secondary CEGEPs and universities, and finally adult education.

The most important chapters are the last two, which deal with the inheritance from the past: the questions of language, religion, power, the quality versus equality debate, and the problems common to education systems in many parts of the world.

Furnished with authoritative references, copies of relevant legislation, a glossary of terms, a list of key dates and a good bibliography, Between Past and Future is fair and up to date, but hardly stimulating. Canadian collections should have this book for specific projects in teacher training.
