CANADIAN PIONEER CHRISTMAS.

AV International, 1986. Sound Filmstrip. 70 frames. $38.50. Includes teacher's guide and 1 cassette.

Kindergarten to Grade 6

Volume 16 Number 4
1988 July

The style and symbolism of nineteenth-century, mainly Ontario, Christmas celebrations are described here using a hodgepodge of documentary prints, modern photos, and reproductions of Christmas cards, either old themselves or of the old days. Much is made of the Christian symbols. Although the set is supposed to be pioneer oriented, the emphasis is on how the genteel celebrate. The narrator's voice is rather thin and monotonous. Although much can be learned aurally about Christmases past, the visuals do not blend in comfortably with one another or with the text. The switch from old to new and back is disconcerting. The manual includes a general introduction, presentation tips, legends and stories, and the text of the narration.

Recommended with reservations.
