Fryer's book is Canadian War Museum publication number 23 and adds to the Hat of works dealing with the 1837-38 rebellions in Upper Canada and the ensuing raids from the United States. Fryer states that the rebellions were of little consequence in the development of responsible government. Since this is a military history, the arguments for and against that statement are left for other books.

The format of the book (wider than it is tall) makes the reproduction of pictures in large size possible, although there are relatively few that fill an entire page (only seven). All the pictures are excellent black-and-white reproductions of contemporary scenes, uniforms and people involved in the events described.

The rebels of 1837 are portrayed as misguided, bumbling enthusiasts with only a few supporters. According to Fryer, they were traitors working for republican government and were opposed by the vast majority of the loyal population. A good portion of the book is naturally taken up with details of the raising and disposition of armed forces. Some engagements, notably the Battle of the Windmill at Prescott and that at Pelee Island, are described in detail. These descriptions maintain the interest of even the casual reader, while other sections will be of interest only to the serious military historian.

I recommend that high school libraries acquire this book only for the pictures or to meet a need for military history in the senior grades. Volunteers and Redcoats is riddled with typographical errors that make it very annoying to read and mar an otherwise adequate production.
