This cookbook contains a diverse selection of approximately six hundred recipes contributed by Harrowsmith readers from Canada and the U.S. Like earlier titles in the series, this cookbook retains the Harrowsmith tradition of including recipes associated with the countryside, gardening, the woods and family food traditions.

The recipes, all of which have been tested by editors in Canada and the U.S., are clearly explained and require a minimal amount of preparation. Recipes are topically arranged in twelve sections rather than ten as in earlier volumes. The two additional sections are "Breakfast and Snacks" and "Holiday," which offers a selection of international favourites such as pannetone (Italian Christmas Bread) and tortiere. Some of the recipes are preceded by introductory comments; the name of the contributor is appended to each recipe along with city and province or state. Full-colour photographs, line drawings, and a recipe index are also included.
