Edith Fowke has done it once again. Her interest in and knowledge of children's folklore are contagious. Her first volume, Sally Go Round the Sun (McClelland and Stewart, 1969. 1981) was for very young children.

This second volume, Ring Around the Moon, is a compilation of two hundred songs, riddles, rhymes and tongue-twisters for children a little older. It is a compact collection at a very reasonable price. Ring Around the Moon combines traditional Canadian songs and charts with some contemporary verses, such as "Maverick the Two Gun Cowboy," and those contained in the Dopey Ditties chapter. This volume is convenient because of its organization, either by type or by topic; for example, riddles, and love and marriage. The index, which combines titles and first lines, is also useful for quick reference.

All songs contain the melody line in musical notation or "to the tune or notation. Judith Gwyn Brown's pen-and-ink drawings also provide delightful accompaniment. Once again, this Fowke "folk" collection conveys a love of the oral tradition. Ring Around the Moon will prove very popular with those who wish to gain knowledge of folklore and in turn pass it on to younger ones.
