Cook Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July The three novels in this set are not strangers to most librarians who handle juvenile literature. The fact that these novels are now available in paperback seems to make them more enticing to today's students. When those readers who enjoy adventure stories once get involved in one of these novels, I feel they are sure to come back for the remaining ones. Lost in the Barrens won the Governor General's Award for juvenile literature in 1958. In Lost in the Barrens the reader is introduced to Jamie, a white, and Awasin, a Cree. Their adventures in the barren lands of Canada's north are truly enjoyable. In Curse of the Viking Grave we once again follow the adventures of Jamie and Awasin and two other youngsters. Here they face not only the dangers of the tundra but also the curse of an ancient Inuit. With his usual fast pace, Farley Mowat leads his readers down the Big River to the story's conclusion. The Black Joke, set in the 1930’s, is a story about bootlegging liquor. Although thought of as a sin by many, rum-running was a way of life for two lads along the coast of Newfoundland.
