CIP Grades 4 to 6 Reviewed by Jane Robinson Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July Thomas Raddall's straightforward, easy-to-read style enables the reader to experience life in the past and to become privy to the hardships, determination and accomplishments of someone who lived at another time. This shouldn't be surprising, since Raddall has been an accredited writer of Nova Scotia historical fiction since he began writing professionally nearly fifty years ago. Although most of the book is in narrative form with very little dialogue, the descriptive prose and evocative imagery will hold the attention of intermediate readers. Full-page black-and-white drawings effectively and realistically mirror all the significant aspects of the story—the harshness of the storm, the bleakness of the setting, the simplicity of the time, and the personalities of the characters. The traditional picture-book size and format of Courage in the Storm will likely limit it to readers in grades 4 to 6. However, It could also be read aloud as an introduction to or as a supplementary reading for a social studies or literature unit. Recommended. Jane Robinson, Winnipeg, Man.
