CIP Adult Reviewed by Adele Case Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July Coast Salish Essays, a collection of sixteen essays written by Wayne Suttles, a recognized authority on the ethnography of the Coast Salish peoples, covers many aspects of the life of the early peoples of the Northwest coast. This collection summarizes some of the findings Suttles collected during his lifetime of work studying the life and behaviour of the native people who inhabited southern British Columbia and interacted with neighbouring tribes in coastal Puget Sound. The essays are collected in four broad groups dealing with the historic social systems; knowledge, belief, and art in the historic culture; adaptation and survival through the European invasion; and inferences about prehistory. The book contains an exhaustive bibliography dating from 1847 with data from Sir George Simpson's journey through to material published in the 1980’s. There is also an appendix on the spelling of native words. A wealth of black-and-white photographs shows the pursuits, artwork, geographic points of interest, and leaders and influential members of the Coast Salish people. Suttles' essays will be an encouragement and inspiration to ethnographers and anthropologists who have the patience and determination to seek answers to many of the questions he poses. These essays are written for those who have a keen interest in native ethnography. This volume will be valuable to future scholars and field workers.
