The works included feature characters in a Caribbean setting or present the Caribbean immigrant experience in Canada. As this book contains such a variety of authors, the quality of the works understandably varies. For this reason, A Shapely Fire is not a must-read, although it may be of use to a student dealing with the literature of Caribbean writers in an independent study. Sloppy editing shows up in the many typographical errors. Some selections, due to language and content, may cause problems in more conservative areas. A Shapely Fire does present many issues that touch on island life, local and foreign politics, women's rights, history, and frustration-all vital topics. Perhaps that is the problem with this collection. The collection lacks a focus other than the Caribbean origin. It is more valuable for its parts than for its entirety.
