Louise de Kiriline Lawrence is the author of several books, including The Lovely and the Wild (Natural Heritage/ Natural History, 1987), which won the Burroughs Medal in 1969.

The author, a member of an aristocratic Swedish family, came to Canada after her husband, a Russian army officer, was killed. Another Winter, Another Spring is a true story of their passionate love in the hostile environment of Russia.

Influenced by her father, who loathed feminine weakness, Louise was determined to pursue independence and a non-conventional career. This determination and fearlessness thrust her into the midst of World War I as a Red Cross nurse. Later, determined to be with her husband, she found herself in the midst of the revolution in Russia where she was incarcerated. There, she experienced famine, tragedy and terror.

Louise first met her husband at a dance in the Russian officers' mess in Denmark. Drawn to the arrogant yet aloof young officer who asked her to dance, Louise fell hopelessly in love. It was a love that teetered on the brink of disaster at every turn. It was a love for which she made every sacrifice regardless of the consequences.

The narrative draws the reader into the soul of Russia. As the author tells of the most chaotic events and extraordinary experiences, there is never a trace of bitterness, but always the spirit of determination to fulfill her mission, to set things right, and to confront the negative forces that stand in the way of her union with her husband.

Another Winter, Another Spring is an exciting story. Young adults in particular will find this biography inspiring.
