Dorothy Joan Harris has written several successful children's books and novels for teenagers. Racing Stripes for William is a delightful story about an appealing young boy whose curiosity and enjoyment of the natural world around him make him late coming home from school, late coming home from the store, and late for supper. Harris's happy narrative is imaginative and quickly paced for her young readers. Children will easily identify with William's interest in everything he encounters on his walks. They will love the idea of painting racing stripes on running shoes.

Vlasta Van Kampen's beautiful watercolours simply and effectively illustrate William's exciting world of cats and caterpillars, family and home, dandelion fluff and butterflies. This story will appeal to all five-to-seven-year-old children. It has an excellent Primary vocabulary, a simple direct story-line, humour, a warm home setting, and wonderful illustrations. It could be read independently by those in late grade 1 and grade 2.
