What's in a Name? is the first in a series of stories about a young girl, Frances, and her cat, Josephine, written by Toronto playwright Pauline Carey.

Frances prefers to be called by her real name instead of her family's nicknames for her like "Franny," "Francesca," and "Fran, Fran the frying pan." Grandma Corelli is the only person who always calls her by her real name.

Frances finally asks her family to call her by her real name one night at dinner, but soon they forget and go back to "Fran." At bedtime, Frances is always "Frances," however, and mother explains to her that nicknames are just another way that the family shows that they love her. Frances comes to realize that it doesn't matter what you are called, it's how you feel about yourself inside that counts, just like her cat Josephine. Josephine always acted "like a queen" and didn't seem to care what she was called-"Josie," "Jo," or "Puss"-she knew it was for her.

The print is large and readable, and the cover is colourful and attractive. The black-and-white line drawings done by Toronto artist Lee Munroe bring the characters to life.

The story would be a good one to read aloud to Primary grades, and may lead to discussions about names and naming and the power of names in defining identity.
