Joshua Fuller was born with a heart disease, and this fact created a life of emotional ups and downs for his parents, particularly for his mother.

Dawn Winkelman Fuller (of British Columbia, formerly of Chicago) writes about life with her son Joshua-the trips to hospitals, the ordeals of dealing with some members of the medical profession, as well as the upheavals in life's daily routines. Joshua's illness has put a strain on his parents' marriage, but with courage and determination (despite many setbacks), Dawn and Chuck Fuller have survived as a couple and are now the parents of another son, Zachary.

The Heart of Joshua is told in the form of a diary and is described as "a story of hope for all parents of children with chronic illnesses." However, the book is very useful as well as inspirational for those same parents because the author has suggestions on questions they should ask the doctor, preparing a child for a hospital visit, and hospitable hospitals. There is also a glossary of terms that are used frequently in conjunction with heart disease.

Although this book is particularly useful and inspiring for parents and workers in the field of medicine and social work, it would also be helpful for students in family studies courses in secondary schools.
