The Bentwood Box is the first in a series of books for children on Northwest Coast Indian art. The book opens with a short story about the wooden boxes native peoples made years before the Europeans reached the Pacific Coast and are still making today. An explanation of how these boxes are constructed follows.

In the second portion of the book, the designs are explained and several activities, including puzzles and mazes, are outlined to familiarize children with these unique designs and shapes. Materials needed for these activities are listed and are accompanied by clear black-and-white drawings to illustrate the instructions. The final activity is the making of a bent-wood box; this is achieved by using the cover of the book.

The final segment of the book is the Adult Teaching Guide. Here, directions to activities are given in further detail. References for additional information on Northwest Coast Indian art are provided. For the teacher, parent or group leader who wishes to increase children's knowledge of Northwest Coast Indian culture, this book is recommended.
