Ages 8 to 10 Reviewed by Jane Robinson Volume 16 Number 3 1988 May Parade of Pets is more than just a "parade" of animal puzzles, it's something of a marathon. Veteran puzzle-writer Pauline Philip has provided enough variety and challenge in this latest collection to keep even the most experienced puzzle-lover busy. But with ten different types of puzzles together making a grand total of forty-six puzzles in all, there should be something for everyone including the novice. There are directions at the beginning of each section or group of puzzles (unless the puzzle is self-explanatory), and anywhere from two to six puzzles of that type follow. Children can learn about familiar and exotic animals as they solve clues, wind their way through mazes, find hidden words, fill in missing letters, and distinguish between similarities and differences, But. . .that will only be accomplished if they can overcome a few more fundamental "puzzlers": clues that are sometimes misleading, and others that seem particularly trifling; answers that have little if anything to do with the topic; instances where more than one answer is possible; and one section for which the directions are not specific enough. Happily, there is an answer key at the back of the book that provides the child with a self-check. Even with that, eight-year-olds will likely need help with most of the puzzles. Parade of Pets is not a book for library shelves, but rather has been designed for individual owners to work through with pencils and erasers. Jane Robinson, Winnipeg, Man.
