Cook Volume 16 Number 3 1988 May Poor Cyril, Every time he made one little mistake, his best friend Maggie, the Greenapple Street genius, noticed. Monday morning he wore socks that didn't match and Maggie noticed. He just never could do things as well as Maggie. Then it happened! Mr. Flynn, their teacher, shaved off his moustache. All the girls thought it looked just great and all the boys thought he looked ridiculous. Before you could say scat, Bobby, the class loud-mouth, had bet the girls that the boys could convince Mr. Flynn to grow it back. Maggie thought up the ideas for the girls and poor Cyril was put in charge of the boys' campaign. What with the bet, Maggie's determination to learn the gender of the new baby expected by her mother in a few months, winning a new bicycle, Maggie's family selling their home, and a flu epidemic, the story moves rapidly along. Only the bicycle episode seems somewhat exaggerated. To learn the winner of the bet you will just have to read the story. Ted Staunton, author of Puddleman,* Taking Care of Crumley** and Simon's Surprise,*** continues to write believable stories for young boys and girls that do not involve crime or violence. Hugh A.
