Cox Volume 16 Number 3 1988 May Terry Pugh has edited a collection of articles by eighteen different authors, who include Bishop Remi De Roo; Roy Atkinson, a farmer; Arthur Macklin, national chairperson of the National Farmers Union farm crisis committee; Michael Werier, a Winnipeg lawyer; and Linda Haverstock, a psychologist. In the articles in this collection, farmers describe farm-gate defence tactics, a psychologist details the emotional stress encountered by a family on a farm in financial difficulty, lawyers detail the legal rights and avenues available to a farmer in debt, and a financial planner offers monetary advice. The reasons for the economic crisis in agriculture are presented by members of the National Farmers Union and Anglican bishop Remi De Roo. The bias in this book is in favour of the farmers. One feels tremendous sympathy for those who have tried to defend their property at the farm gate. The bias is not overstated. This is not a Marxist book, though it does lean slightly to the left. Opinions and authors come from all across the Country-Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes, as well as the Prairies and B.C.—so there is no regional bias. Included is a resource list of books, pamphlets and periodical articles related to the topic of farm credit and foreclosure. A helpful and informative book, Fighting the Farm Crisis should find a place on public library shelves. It would also be useful in high schools and universities where the curriculum applies.
