Vast vistas of seaside beaches, swooping seagulls, waves crashing against ominous rocks, and a fog-enshrouded fishing village pique the imagination and overwhelm the focus of the reader. It is only when the focus shifts to a consideration of the poem being illustrated that an incomprehensible incongruity sets in. The illustrations appear to be in sharp contrast to the power of the poem. The simplistic figures, with their mere suggestion of facial features, seem strangely childish and inept. The ghostly effect is not unlike an animated "Orphan Annie" episode. Although visually exciting, the artist's literal interpretation misses the impact of Poe's poem and leaves a strange unsettled feeling of incompleteness and disappointment.
