Have you ever wondered what is under the water? Land formations, sea creatures, benign and poisonous fish, opportunities for mariculture, treasures lost centuries ago or in twentieth-century shipwrecks—all are touched on in Undersea, a thirty-two-page booklet in the "CHP Technology Series." Snippets of information are given with accompanying illustrations, and the brief explanations should encourage young readers to dive through the booklet and then do further research. Indeed, the booklet lists a number of technical reference books that would provide additional material.

Other booklets in this technology series deal with topics in the realms of communications, terrestrial travel and outer space. If there is a weakness, it is that only the surface is scratched, but this may be sufficient to "lest the water" of student interest without drowning the young reader in a plethora of detail. The team of contributing artists and writers sparks interest with excellent graphics, maps and sketches, which alone will answer a number of the questions a young reader would pose. Local interest is maintained through references to Canadian fish, mammals and marine-related industries.

The technical sections on scuba and snorkel gear are set out simply, yet with attention to safety precautions that should be observed. Brief reports on robotic submarine dives for the Air India crash wreckage and photographs of the Titanic from a manned submersible suggest that this phase of technology is in its infantry.

Altogether, the bright booklet with its range of marine-related topics should have wide appeal for a young reader. Let us hope that the challenges hinted at (in mining, recreation and artificial reef-building) will prove irresistible to Canada's future oceanographers.
