Turner Volume 16 Number 2 1988 March Verrall, a teacher and education coordinator of C A S N P, has compiled a very worthwhile list of resources in consultation with Keeshig-Tobias, an Ojibway freelance writer who is responsible for the excellent criteria for evaluation of books concerning native peoples. The annotated resources cover books for children and elementary schools, teaching resources divided into various types of media, books for youth and adults, and various supplemental lists such as periodicals, publishers, and sources. Books are further broken down into several categories, such as picture books, legends and stories, fiction, biography, the arts, drama, education, and many more. Reading and interest levels are given in each case, although there are necessarily overlaps. Annotations are brief and to the point. In some cases constructive criticism suggests weaknesses and other resources to supplement or provide an opposing or more realistic viewpoint. The following are some of the specialists credited with preparing some of the lists: Beth Southcott, art; Beatrice Woolsey (an English teacher), literature; David Boe, music. Canadian resources predominate, although American publications of relevance are included, with priority being given to recent publications. Some of the particularly useful older copyright dates included may be out of print but are well worth looking for in libraries or used books outlets. Verrall's Resource Reading List, 1987 is highly recommended as a selection tool for all elementary and secondary school libraries, central resource centres, and public libraries. It should be noted that C A S N P is a national non-profit organization composed of concerned native and non-native members working together to promote awareness and understanding of native (Indian, Inuit and Metís) issues and goals.
