Lesley Fairfield, who has written What's the Word?/Cherchez le Mot,* Let's Go!/ Allons-y!** and Let's Eat!/Allons manger! (Kids Can Press, 1982) is the author of a new book from Kids Can Press, My First French-English Word Book.

It is an illustrated picture dictionary for young children with both English and French text and is arranged as a series of scenes from a child's daily routine. One page consists of nine pictures with the English text above and the French text below each one, while the opposite page is a humorous line drawing of a scene from children's daily life using the pictured vocabulary. Children will enjoy the funny scenes and will have the opportunity to review and develop their French vocabulary by finding the items illustrated on the opposite page. The variety of practical vocabulary presented includes dressing, eating, outdoor activities, visiting the market, the gasoline station, the library, the playground, school, the gym, the swimming pool, the doctor's office, the bakery, the hair salon, the restaurant, and the circus, and finally ends with bath-time and bedtime.

The cover is colourful and attractive, the vocabulary is simple, and the text is large and easy to read. The black-and-white line drawings are framed in blue, and the pages with the pictures and vocabulary have a background of blue-and-white squares.

This new paperback is a nice size for young children to handle, and should add to the fun for children beginning to learn French.
