Grades 9 and up Reviewed by Charles Ottosen Volume 16 Number 2 1988 March The Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs is an annual publication compiled and written by a corps of Canadian scholars and experts who are well known in their fields of history, political science and public affairs. The Review continues to remain useful because it does what its title says-reviews the political and public affairs of Canada for a designated year. The first half of the book deals with the year's events at the national level, while the second half deals with events at the provincial level. The book opens with a summary of the year in outline form organized chronologically and concludes with a necrology for the year and two excellent indexes. The contributors take no particular point of view, preferring instead to review the events in their designated areas. The chapters are written in a thorough yet non-technical manner the layman can understand, and the book, as a whole, is laid out in a logical and easy-to-use manner. It is unfortunate that a book of this quality cannot be made more current. This year's edition comes out nearly three full years after the fact. In addition, it would be nice if the writers referred to more than just a few of the country's major newspapers in their quotes. For those who enjoy politics (or at least enjoy watching the politicians) or for those who work in or write about the field, this book is useful. The year 1984 was an exceptionally busy one in Canada, what with three different prime ministers in office, the Liberal leadership convention, the federal election, and visits by the pope and Queen. All these events, plus many others, arc discussed in this year's Review. Whether you are trying to settle an argument with a colleague (when did the John Turner bum-patting incident take place?) or need to do a paper on some aspect of Canadian politics in 1984, the Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs is a good tool to use.
