1988 March

Fourteen photos chosen from the book celebrating a day in the life of Canada published in 1984 by Collins are included with varying results. Size, clarity and not-so-subtle colour changes are noticeable in all. Colours in the book tend to contain more blue and green; some are cropped better and presented better. However, the photo of the shingled manse that almost disappears on the dust jacket of Collins' book is quite impressive in this calendar: the skin tones of the rafters on the Ottawa river are clearer (the picture is reversed for some reason); the picture of the Mennonite farmer opposite August is more balanced; and the larger format of the book picture of the British Columbian field workers invites one right into the rows of vegetables. In most instances the quality of the colour in the book is superior, but the calendar remains a delightful private acquisition. It measures 35 x 26 cm and each photo is red-dotted on a map of Canada to show its location. Water and mountain prevail. There is not one image that is distinctive of a third of the country—the boundless prairie—in either the book or the calendar. Tut! Tut!
