Volume 16 Number 2 1988 March The story of Canada's "man in motion" is rapidly rising to the top of various best-seller lists and will doubtless justify the first run of 65,000 copies, with a second printing already planned. Like his friend Terry Fox, Rick Hansen is becoming a Canadian legend for his tour through thirty-four countries, during which he wheeled an unbelievable 24,901.55 miles or the distance around the world. The account of the car accident at age fifteen that resulted in paralysis of his legs is now familiar, but one must read this book to gain an understanding of his determination to succeed in sports, his first love, in spite of his handicap and to do something to open the minds of people to the need for "spinal cord research, . . . rehabilitation programs, and wheelchair sports." Jim Taylor, a Vancouver sports columnist and author of three books, empathizes with the difficulties and needs of the physically handicapped. Teresa, his daughter who lives at home, became a quadriplegic with severe brain damage at age fourteen as the result of a skiing accident. Each night during the two-year tour, no matter how tired or sick he might be, Hansen dictated the day's story including his frustrations, pain, loneliness, his most personal thoughts, and above all, his growing love for Amanda Reid, now his wife. Those cassettes, sent to Taylor, are the basis of this book. Each chapter begins with about two pages of italicized print, presumably Taylor's introduction, which leads into the personal, edited narrative that follows. No matter who is responsible for the writing, the book is an inspiring story of one man's courage and dedication to a cause. Hansen is not only articulate, but also charismatic with a strong sense of purpose, and we'll hear more of him in the future. Highly recommended for all public and school libraries.
