An experienced twelve-year-old fan of Eric Wilson's mysteries read this book and proclaimed that it was not as good as the others because it took too long to get started, and it was hard to separate the pretend who-dunit from the real one. The murder of the hostess of a mystery weekend gets confused with the fake murder and the fake suspects.

Liz Austen and Makiko, her newfound friend from Japan, are Lucy Maud Montgomery fans thrilled to be exploring the actual scenes of the life of Anne of Green Gables. At the same time, they are fascinated by the staged mystery killing and are determined to solve it. When their hostess really is murdered, they are equally determined to find out who did it. The novel tells of their search for clues that leads them into real danger when they come too close to the killer.

The plot is rather complicated, but information about the Prince Edward Island setting and the author of the Anne stories provides interesting background for young readers. The best aspect of the novel is the friendship between Liz and Makiko; it is a humorous, touching and realistic portrayal of the growth of feeling between two teenagers of different cultures. Despite my young fan's comments, the book would be a worthwhile addition to a mystery library for Intermediate-level students.
