Bonnie Billick has taken the bull by the horns and proceeded to do what many of us have dreamed of for years. Frustrated by a lack of appropriate teaching materials for the people she was working with, she went out and proceeded to operate and publish what is obviously needed to fill a gap in Canadian publishing. This gap is material adultlike in content, yet simplified in format, so that it can be effectively used.

Her creation, Your News, is a simplified newspaper covering one or two important topics per issue. The print is somewhat larger than normal and each new paragraph begins with a darkened first letter to indicate that it is a new paragraph. Complex articles include a vocabulary box before the article, listing any difficult but common words that the student will need. In addition, other words are explained as you come to them, if they are somewhat difficult or have obscure meanings. Each newspaper has quizzes, crossword puzzles, and word games to check on comprehension and understanding of the articles.

This is a paper with a wide range of uses from the hospital setting to resource rooms and learning assistance rooms across Canada. Too often we encourage students to use the newspaper only to have them be less then successful because of the level of language used and the complexity of some of the articles. Here is a newspaper that children can use and be successful at. A good addition to any school library and well worth ordering not only for its own worth but for the promotion of the production of Canadian materials of this sort.
