Typical teenage trials and triumphs-overcoming overweight and have nice clothes, good friends, dates and young love—make up this young adult novel. Hope Mathers, the main character, is overweight but loves to fantasize about being gorgeous and attractive to boys. She gets some help with her eating problems from a formerly fat cousin and works hard to become a new person. Her new good looks cause her -to behave rather foolishly for a time, but by the end of the story she becomes sensible and a credit to her mentor cousin.

The story takes place in Kamloops, B.C., in 1944 and has many allusions to forties radio programs, stars and fads, along with references to World War II problems such as rationing, enlisting, missing-in-action, Japanese Canadians, and the Nazis. All this adds appeal for the adult reader; however, the young reader really won't care about the historical allusions, but will read the book for Hope's transformation and love life.

Easy to read, fast-moving and good for grade 6 to 8 girls.
