She counts them in class, refuses to share them with her friends, and eats them before supper. One night she has a terrible nightmare. She is chased by a jellybean monster and comes down with an incurable case of jellybean fever. Next morning her face is covered with coloured spots from jellybeans. Fortunately they wash off. Katy has learned her lesson, and though she still loves jellybeans, she shares them with her friends and never again eats them in class or before supper. The full-colour illustrations in this picture book show real children in contemporary situations. The pictures and text arc integrated well, Katy has a wonderfully expressive face. The monster is moderately scary, and the adults in Katy's dream are stern. The two small girls who shared this story with me were very intrigued by Katy's adventures. They began to adapt the story to their play. They were chased by jellybean monsters and suffered from jellybean fever!
