Eleanor Thomson writes a cookery column for The Kingston Whig-Standard and has developed her love of food and her pleasure in .the past into a feast of historical and modern recipes. She has dedicated A Loving Legacy to her three daughters as her "eulogy to our female ancestors." Embellishing the recipes with historical detail, Thomson brings alive the rural and urban life of Ontario pioneer times. She has a good wit, a chatty tone, and a warm regard for her family's traditions.

The recipes are punctuated with homy anecdotes that appeal to one's nostalgia for the past. (No metric measurements here!) A few of the recipes are included only for posterity; Thomson does not expect them to be used. However, most of the recipe contents are basically "down-home," as the ingredients can be found in the average kitchen. The directions are easy to follow and Thomson has translated for the present. Soups and salads are not included, but there are chapters on sauces, desserts, wild game, vegetables, and meat cookery.

The book is easy to use, with a spiral binding and an index to recipes. It is quietly illustrated with black-and-white engravings. Indexing the aspects of pioneer life might have widened the usefulness of this book for students, but it is a comforting tome to tuck on your kitchen shelf.
