Camilla Gryski's first two books, Cat's Cradle, Owl's Eyes: A Book of String Games ¹ and Many Stars and More String Games ², introduced basic techniques and presented a range of easy-to-moderately-difficult string figures. Now, Super String Games gives more involved and challenging figures for those ready to extend their repertoire.

An initial section first reviews important vocabulary and preliminary moves. This is followed by approximately twenty-eight advanced string figures from all over the world, each clearly explained in well-organized instructions. The author frequently gives background information, suggests variations and extensions, and gives chants or stories to say along with the figures. As in the previous books, uncluttered line drawings by Tom Sankey chart each sequence of the game.

Interestingly, in her introduction, the author encourages her readers to "doodle" with their strings; that is, to play and develop their own figures. She says: "And if you manage to invent a spectacular string game, be sure to write it down. Every string artist has a figure that got away!" Camilla Gryski has managed to get thousands of children in Canada and abroad (her books have appeared in a number of other countries) playing string games; her revival of this ancient folk art will take on increased impetus if these same children now start making up their own figures. It is hoped that the author will be able to document these elusive and beautiful creations in a future publication.

Recommended for home, school, and public libraries, especially where the first two books have been enjoyed and used.
