CIP Grades 7 and up Reviewed by Mollie Hooper Volume 15 Number 6 1987 November Although this cookbook is a group venture, the idea was spearheaded by Beverley Brown and Brenda Burns, the president and the secretary of the Native Women's Association. From this publishing project they learned and taught the essentials of marketing, inventory control, housekeeping, and research, all of which will prove a valuable resource to their young people. Volume 2 is under way. The purpose of the book is an attempt to preserve the Native culture through recipes using those meats, fish, and edible nuts, berries, and grains from the wild that were once the sole source of food for their forebears. This aim is achieved as well as can be expected within the narrow confines of a small book. The index gives a good indication of the contents: big game, small game, game birds, fish, wild edibles, plus information on the individual animal, bird, etc. to be cooked. The chapter on "Cleaning, Skinning, and Tanning" was expecially informative. The recipes are a combination of past and present ingredients so the book is perhaps not what the purist is looking for. This cookbook is well organized, well indexed, with interesting illustrations spaced throughout. Printed in sepia on sturdy paper, with a coil binding and strong cover, it should stand up well under usage. It is a natural gift for campers, cottagers, hunters, their neighbours, and anyone interested in wild-game cooking. Mollie Hooper, Qualicum Beach, B.C.
