Holman Volume 15 Number 6 1987 November Space is one of a series of Canadian books published with the support of the Canadian Studies Program, department of the secretary of state. The author is a vice president of Spar Aerospace. He has served as information director for NASA and as associate dean of Columbia University's School of Journalism. His experience enables him to give the reader an inside view of the politics of competition in the space race. The introduction to Space gives a brief history of man's attempt to solve the mystery of the universe. The succeeding six chapters tell the story of Canada's involvement in space exploration and of the people who, with the launching of Alouette in 1962, made Canada the third nation in space. Canada's achievement in the field of communications is particularly well documented. The sixth chapter is a fascinating account of the proposed space station to be built, sometime after 1992, approximately 400 km above the earth. At the end of each chapter is a list of topics for discussion and further research. A short epilogue honours the seven astronauts who were killed in the explosion of Mission 5IL on January 28, 1986. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and diagrams. The text is interspersed with highlighted pieces of Space interesting additional information. A glossary of technical terms completes the volume. This is a very readable, informative account of Canada's contribution to space exploration. The technical information is easy to understand. Stories of the people involved in the various projects add human interest. The need for international co-operation and the preservation of "Spaceship Earth" are emphasized. The story conveys the sense of wonder and awe at what has already been discovered and the exciting possibilities for the future. Highly recommended for school and public libraries. Anna L.
