CIP Grades 9 and up Reviewed by Warner Winter Volume 15 Number 6 1987 November Andrew Wreggitt's third collection of poetry, Southeasterly, contains the series of poems which won a first prize in the 1985 CBC literary competition, and other poems about the people, history, and landscape of northern B.C. Wreggit's view of existence has a hard edge to it, yet underneath it, he displays an angry compassion which emerges with particular strength when he considers the cruelly of man and of Fate. In the human world his compassion reaches the outcast, the oppressed, native peoples, and immigrants in particular, those whom life has pushed to the edge of despair. Yet his social and humane awareness resists sentimentality. Wreggitt's style is casual and informal. His poems often appear as deceptively simple and unstudied. Metaphorical statements of great beauty and aphoristic insights are expressed in resolutely plain, unpretentious language. Unfortunately the illustrations by Jacqueline Forrie are not as inspired as the writing. Creative writing classes could make use of this easily accessible and most interesting book of poems.
