This is one of a series of booklets titled Flight, Robotics, Planets and Galaxies, Space Tour, and Electricity. In an introductory statement it contrasts the time it took for news of Columbus's discovery of America with the instant communication as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.

The booklet will be a useful reference in school libraries and also in public libraries. It provides good basic information on many communication developments from telephone, radio and television to today's use of satellites, computers and microchips. There are interesting details about NAVCOM (aircraft communication and navigation) and about spying activities. Finally, questions are raised about communications with outer space.

Large coloured pictures and some graphs very clearly illustrate processes and terms such as modem, analogue, orbit, and holograph. Twenty terms are defined in a glossary. Communications is a useful booklet written in clear expository prose. Lower grade level would depend on an individual student's ability to handle vocabulary.
