The authors of Canada Since 1945: Power, Politics, and Provincialism* have done it again with Canada 1900-1945. This new work by Professors Robert Bothwell, lan Drummond, and John English was written to cover the important period from the beginning of the twentieth century until the end of World War Two, and is intended as a companion work to Canada Since 1945, The intent is to reach a general audience because the writers believe that history fails "if it does not reach a large and literate public.”

This was an exciting period of history for the young nation, and the important events and themes are examined. These themes include Canada's role with Great Britain and the Empire, arid an emerging spirit of independence. The country also went through two world wars and the Great Depression, and experienced several economic ups and downs. As 1945 came to a close, Canada faced the problem of a relatively low population, most of whom tended to live in the urban areas.

The scope is very wide. The authors have even included an interesting, although necessarily brief, chapter on "Literacy, Literature and Education." However, as historians, their main emphasis has been on the economic and political factors that continue to shape this nation. For this reason, they have also provided a good background of information about our very important relationship with the United States.

There is a comprehensive index and a large, detailed bibliography. Also included is an appendix of general election results for the years 1900 to 1945. Although scholarly expertise is obvious, this is a very readable book which will be enjoyed by students at the senior secondary and post-secondary levels. It will also provide an excellent resource for history teachers.
