It covers a large time frame, starting with people in 700 B.C. and ending with the population in the 17th century. The emphasis of the book is on three representative and significant time periods in Ukraine's history. Much of the text is based on previous publications and one in particular, An Outline of the History of Costumes by K. Stamerov. While this type of book, which is narrow in subject focus, can be overwhelming for the average reader, this book is not overly technical and is simple enough in tone to be of interest to a wider readership. There are many line illustrations as well as colour plates to enhance the text. The colour plates are full-page illustrations and, while not being totally accurate, do give a good generalized picture of how people in Ukraine dressed themselves during various time periods. There is a table of contents and a very useful bibliography. The book can be used in support of various cuniculi in subjects such as art, home economics, and social studies. While the book pales in comparison to Ukrainian Folk Clothing and Attire by L. Burachyska readers should gain a greater insight and better understanding from Mr. Tkach's efforts.
