Volume 15 Number 4 1987 July Calgary during World War II is the setting for Myra Paperny's latest book, the story of a young boy torn between the demands of his musical talent and his desire to fit into the pattern of ordinary boyhood. Young Bernard (Buzz) Bush is a talented musician whose parents are dedicated to furthering his musical career. But life is difficult for a boy who is not allowed to play baseball or hockey for fear of injuring his hands. During the weeks when Buzz's mother is in New York helping her own sick mother, Buzz suffers through being quarantined with scarlet fever and having his beloved and understanding uncle reported missing in action. When the strain becomes intolerable, Buzz quarrles with his strict father and finally runs away from home. This action precipitates a better communication among all the family members that leads to Buzz's acceptance of music as an integral part of his life despite the sacrifices required. The family conflicts and Buzz's struggle to understand and accept his own desires are believable and will interest young readers. While Paperny is sometimes heavy-handed in introducing details of life on the home front during the war, young readers will scarcely notice these as they follow the fast-paced action that should make the book a popular choice.
