Who has not been fascinated by huge powerful whales as they move gracefully through surging, billowing waters? Thanks to television, most of us have had the opportunity to see the whale phenomenon and wonder about the lives, journeys, and destinies of the largest creatures on earth. Every year, more people take the opportunity to watch whales. The Department of fisheries and oceans has decided to ‘catch the wave’ and produce a book for armchair and marine whale watchers.

The Guide to Watching Whales in Canada is a deceptively simple book that provides information on individual species of whales. Habitat, feeding, reproduction, behaviour, swimming, speed, scale, and other interesting facts that emphasize the uniqueness of each whale are all included.

Maps of the distribution and a full-page spread on each whale accompany each section. Guidelines for watching whales, how to distinguish whale groups, identifying species by what can be seen out of the water, and a list of suggested readings are provided.

Tips on how to observe the cetaceans with maximum safety and minimum disturbance will be helpful for the water-borne watcher. This book is recommended for both elementary and high school libraries.
