Basil Johnston is an Ojibway member of the Cape Croker Indian Reserve in Ontario. He is a lecturer in the Royal Ontario Museum's department of ethnology and vice-chairman for the Ontario Geographic Names Board. Ojibway is his mother tongue. As a teacher and writer specializing in Ojibway history, language, and mythology, he is encouraging young Ojibways to learn their language and traditions. His other books include Moose-meat and Wild Rice,*Ojibway Ceremonies,** Ojibway Heritage,*** and Tales the Elders Told. ****

By Canoe & Moccasin begins with the birth of Nanabush, a Manitou with supernatural powers, who came to the land of the Anishinaubaeg people at Michilimackinac. When Nanabush became a man, he set out to defend his tribe from the many enemies who were threatening to destroy their lands. His pursuit of the giant beaver, the weendigoes, and other monsters took him from Lake Winnipeg to Lake Ontario and from Chicago to Lake Couchiching. The author uses the adventures of Nanabush to explain the meaning of the native place names of lakes, rivers, islands, and cities. Although Nanabush is a hero to his people, many of his exploits reveal human failings and this adds touches of humour to the tales.

Drawings by David Beyer contribute to the attractiveness of the book. A map with an index of the place names and a pronunciation guide are very useful additions. Recommended for school and public libraries.
