K-Grade 1 Reviewed by Elaine Blakey Volume 15 Number 3 1987 May Containing a fresh view of everyday happenings, from the perspective of a four-year-old child, this small book of free verse chronicles the relationship between a forty-year-old uncle and his small nephew. The poems are written in the form of conversation between child and adult and contain childview terms such as "Black Weirdo Spiders" and childview explanations of graveyards, veins, where meat comes from, and other mysteries of the adult world. The print is brown on beige paper in clear, easy to read type. The illustrations were done by two young boys, one seven and one nine. Their pencil drawings complement the text, adding to the childlike view of the world that pervades the book. Older children will enjoy hearing these poems read aloud, but likely will not recognize themselves in the four-year-old. They may find the poems difficult to read on their own, because the free verse format does not indicate a change in speaker, A good choice for a read aloud or sharing book, especially between parent or grandparent and child.
