This is a collection of mini-autobiographies of women who recently emigrated to Canada. Seventeen such women tell their own stories and the result is consistently interesting and often moving. Included in each narrative is an outline of each woman's life in both her country of origin and Canada, together with her perception of what the future holds. The author wisely allows these women to speak for themselves and this proves to be a feature that adds warmth and authenticity to the book. The format is a very simple one and yet, for this type of work, remarkably effective. Each vignette is complete in itself and the total effect is to reveal a variety of women with different backgrounds, domestic circumstances, attitudes, and strengths. For some of these i women we feel sympathy and even concern, while for several the reader's reaction is one of profound admiration.

Immigration is often considered in terms of figures and economics. A book like this reminds us that it is concerned with individual people who have often made heroic decisions to emigrate and face remarkable problems of adjustment when they arrive in Canada. The selection of women who people these pages are ordinary in the sense that their backgrounds are generally unsensational, but are extraordinary in the manner in which they have revealed themselves in the space of a few pages.

This book can be highly recommended to those seeking some insight into the feelings of women who are new Canadians and will surely engender general understanding for emigrants who are required to overcome many problems on the way to becoming Canadian.
