Concerts, Assemblies. Every year teachers scour libraries and resource centres searching for that elusive something different for their students to perform. Resources, and particularly Canadian resources, are few. Mask 'n' Melody was designed "to meet the drama and music needs that teachers had expressed in. . .market survey questionnaires." To be published three times a year, it will provide Canadian written songs and plays that are suitable for K-8 students to perform. Each issue will include three to six original non-royalty plays and six to ten songs, in addition to staging hints and production suggestions. The themes for this year's issues are: October-Christmas, January-Canadian multiculturalism, and April-Canadian history and regions.

The first issue of Mask 'n' Melody is dedicated to "Teachers Who Do Christmas Concerts." It includes three charmingly illustrated plays and a "Stocking Stuffer" section of three poems and two songs. Each play also includes music for two or three of the chorus sections or group parts, thus giving the director a choice of presentation. The plays vary in performance time from fifteen to twenty-five minutes and each play can accommodate a flexible number of children who spend most of their time on the stage. The "Staging Hints" that follow each play offer helpful suggestions for costumes, as well as stage and lighting directions. The approximate performance time, as well as the suggested grade level, are also indicated.

If the first issue of Mask 'n' Melody is an indication of what is to follow, there can be no doubt that this publication deserves its place in every resource library.
