Published by the Thunder Creek Publishing Co-operative, Heading Out introduces the work of thirty-eight new poets, most of whom have appeared already in periodicals and anthologies, although about half a dozen are here published for the first time. In the wide variety here, every reader will pick favourites; Brenda Niskala's evocation of the lives of Indians and Métis, and the poems of childhood by Lee Gowan, Brenda Rendall, and Brenda Riches are likely to appeal to many. "Come July," by Elyse Yates St. George, and Mary Shepperd's "Spring-Cart and Coachman" examine death in just a few poignant, perfectly disciplined details. A good index makes poems easy to locate, and there is brief information provided on each of the poets. Attractively produced, this is a very fine addition for public libraries where poetry is in demand, and an excellent resource for teachers of English, and perhaps sociology, in high school libraries.
