The outgrowth of "survival kits" that nine British Columbia women passed on to children going out on their own. Cooking Without Mom has about twenty pages of useful household information (basic shopping list, cooking terms, food storage, and how to do laundry) and about 150 recipes. The recipes range from the most elementary (soft-boiled eggs) to a fairly challenging lasagna. with a definite emphasis on familiar dishes that can be prepared easily, quickly, and economically.

Meats, casseroles, and desserts are well covered, and the section on vegetables is excellent, with fourteen recipes for potatoes, and a good choice of vegetarian dishes, including burgers, lasagna, and tofu chili. The recipes are easy to follow, with information on temperature, preparation and cooking time, and number of servings preceding the list of ingredients and very clear directions.

Generous print, heavy paper, and a lie-flat coil binding will make for easy kitchen use, as will the topical index. Notably absent are references to food processors, microwave ovens, and even metric measurements (although the authors have provided a serviceable conversion chart.) High school libraries may already own Smith's Food 101 (McGraw-Hill, 1982), which provides imperial and metric measurements side by side, but Cooking Without Mom will also be well used by students and as a resource by teachers of family studies. Also recommended for public libraries, and as a gift for any beginner in the world of cooking.
