This adequate textbook, written by two Ontario school teachers, covers Canada's history from Confederation to 1986 in a manner suitable for junior high students. The material is generally well organized, but superficial when looking at Quebec issues, and the text persists in referring to French Canadians and English Canadians. It does an excellent job, however, of placing events in their historical perspective. References to non-constitutional and non-political events are good. But the book as a whole oversimplifies many things, and talks down to the students. The biographical sketches included are good, but superficial, as are the questions and exercises found at the end of each chapter. The index is excellent.

The book is appealing in its physical appearance as the illustrations, cartoons, and photographs are of high quality. Maps show information, but lack geographic niceties, e.g.. scale is shown, but not direction. The time lines and summaries are useful. An almost excellent textbook that just misses. Recommended with reservations as an additional classroom reference.
