Collier Macmillan has published more volumes in their excellent Series 2000 selection. The four books, Death Ride and Jo's Search by Paul Kropp, The Wimp and the Jock by John Ibbitson, and The Last War by Martyn Godfrey, all deal with problems and worries that are relevant to young people today. The problems range from the interpersonal competition of every high school to the horror of nuclear war that worries many young people.

These are honest, hard-hitting books that tell it like it is. Death Ride, for instance, is brutally honest about the excuses and peer pressures that combine to force slightly weak people onto a path that can quickly lead them to disaster or death. They are captivating books with good visual descriptions and backgrounds, yet books with a story-line that moves along at a good pace.

The four books were given by me to a group of grade 7 students to read, and they were all very enthusiastic. Their only complaint was that the books were so short that they read them too quickly. My only complaint is with Paul Kropp's book Jo's Search. It is a story about an adopted young girl searching for her real mother. The book seems a little too sugar coated, with everyone being a little too nice, but that may be a moot point. In summary, an excellent series of books to purchase for any library or L.A. centre.
